Anyone else apply to ASU's comp/rhet PhD program? I saw on the results forum someone was admitted yesterday--congratulations! Are other applicants still waiting to hear? I have not heard anything yet, and am trying not to take that applicant's acceptance as a sign that bad news is coming for me. I think it's still early, but the silence makes me nervous. Also, today the My ASU status check page changed--it still says "In Review" but instead of "your application is currently being evaluated," it says to call the grad admissions office with questions--does that mean the evaluation is complete? I am too scared of bad news to call. Also, the "manage recommenders" button has disappeared. Thoughts? This is my top choice program and I am trying to talk myself out of assuming the worst and being devasted. Thanks!

I've applied there as well, and I have heard nothing. The boards shows that the trend over the past few years has been to notify Feb 23 or so, and perhaps the admit this year was an early action decision? As far as the status page, my "In Review" link has always said to call the department with any questions--I've never gotten the "your app is currently being evaluated" message. My manage recommenders link is also still available--however, after clicking on it I see that one of my letter writers never even started the rec form! Grr. Maybe it is still there because my app was incomplete? Maybe I won't get in? Who knows. I had trouble with ASU's reference letter site from the start, and I'm hoping this is just some sort of glitch. I can't imagine that my letter writer would have forgotten to complete this one, as she was prompt to recs for all my other schools. Good luck!

Thanks so much, that is very reassuring! Yes, up until I saw the acceptance on the results page, I wasn't expecting to hear anything until Presidents' Day week. Strange re the status page--mine had the "currently being evaluated" message up until this morning. Best of luck!

Just checked with a friend who was in a previous applicant pool-- she received an acceptance to ASU in late February as well. Have to stress that this was from a previous year, but certainly you should keep hope.

This is pure speculation, but it makes sense to me that if my third letter writer never even began the rec form my link would never have never changed to "under evaluation" (since there wouldn't have been a complete application to evaluate), and that could (probably does) explain the difference in messages. Perhaps the fact that your status has now switched to the "call the office" message means 1) your app was actually reviewed, and 2) the AdCom has finalized a list of initial cohort invites? If I'm correct, I imagine this puts me out of the running. Sigh.

I reeeeaaaalllly hope you are wrong about that, because this is my absolute top choice program. For other programs where my rec letter writers failed to submit theirs, the school reached out to me and told me and let me submit them late--I can't imagine they'd just write you off completely b/c of that. Fingers crossed for us both that we get good news the 3rd week of February (or before).

Maybe I am misunderstanding your response, but I want to clarify that my previous post was only meant to imply that my app may have never even went through the review process, whereas yours had, hence your having had both an "under evaluation" and "call the office" status. I didn't mean to insinuate that somehow you had been rejected or that all admits had been sent out--only that I was speculating about why I never had an "under evaluation" note. But yes, here is to hoping it was complete and their system is just wonky and discordant. I'm rooting for you!!

Just got my acceptance, guess I don't have to worry. Hope you get the same great news soon!

For those still waiting to hear from ASU's PhD in R/C/L, I know that as of 4:30 today, the committee had not yet submitted their decisions for the linguistics folks, at least. For rhet/comp, I think the delay between my notification (I was who posted yesterday) and escalot's might have had something to do with the fact that I'm already an ASU student, so it was a faster process to get my notification into the system (this is wild speculation though--I don't have real knowledge on this like I do on the delay in the linguistics decision). Andsoitgoes--you should contact the English grad program coordinator about your leftover recommendation link! If there really is a problem/it's missing, she may be able to help if you start trying to sort it out now rather than later.

FYI, ASU funding notifications are starting! But I know they'll be making funding offers slowly over the remainder of the semester, so try not to panic if you don't hear right away. (Haha, easier said than done, I know.)

Yes my letter said to respond by March 1 also. BUT, the director of a different school I was accepted to told me that schools aren't allowed to make you decide before April 15, so not to let other schools pressure you to choose sooner. Not sure how that would work practically speaking, though.

I think ComeBackZinc has been saying that the April 15 standard decision deadline is part of the Council of Graduate Schools Resolution, which many schools sign their allegiance to, but essentially it's not a binding document and schools can pretty much do whatever they want. I talked to the both the director of the rhet/comp program and the DGS today, and they've agreed to give me an extension to decide. They said the TA offer stands until April 15, but after mid-March, they can't guarantee that my fellowship will still be available.

So I guess if you're really considering the program, maybe it'd be a good idea to contact the DGS so it doesn't seem like you've just blown off their deadline?
