I've applied to a few schools that seem to have both accepted and rejected a number of applicants based on the survey, but I've heard nothing from them. Does anyone know what this means? Is it some sort of unofficial waitlisting or a "pocket" rejection? Thanks for your help!

Duke did that to me. I hadn't heard anything after acceptances were posted and a large wave of rejections had been posted. I just called the DGS and asked the status of my application since I hadn't heard something. They told me that my application was still under review because they had sent out all the acceptances they could guarantee funding for.

My suggestion would be to call and ask. Can't hurt!

I received that kind of treatment (...) from UCLA. No admission, no rejection, no notification on wait-listing...so yeah I am just worried that me calling them is just a confirmation of rejection...

i'd imagine there is a lot of this. in my dad's department, he has funding for 4 students per year. he is allowed to make 5 offers. if all 5 accept, he only gets 3 the next year. if 3 or fewer accept, then he can send more offers. This would obviously be on a larger scale in a bigger department

Hate to say it, guys, but silence almost always means a rejection. There are some schools that stagger admissions over a week, but if it's been 3 weeks since you saw an admit posted on the results page (edit: and confirmed in the forum), the assumption should be a "no."
