Is it wise to get frequent flyer miles out of graduate school visits?

Keep in mind that the schools are paying for the flights (up to a limit of $500.00)

I'm too lazy to get them even though I'm booking everything through the cheapest options on Google Flights. But is this laziness too excessive?

For one of my visits it was booked through the school's travel agent. I figured there was no harm in asking and she went ahead and put my delta skymiles on the flight! Free miles for me...

Absolutely, especially since with most airlines you can add the frequent flyer info when you check in so you don't need to contact the school if they booked the flight for you. If I book my own flight, I stick with one airline instead of finding the absolute cheapest...the difference in the end is usually under 50 dollars.

You can even add the mileage credit retroactively.

When I flew to visit MyU, they booked me on Frontier, an airline that I'd never flown before, one that wasn't partnered with anyone I had an account with.

When I decided to go to MyU I figured that Frontier would be a convenient airline to fly (they're based in Denver) so I opened a frequent flyer account with them and added my visitation trip miles retroactively.
