CookiesForDinner Posted February 23, 2012 Posted February 23, 2012 So, as I've accepted I'm going to a private GSE, I assumed that I leave the program (albeit short) in a significant amount of debt. Though I started researching federal loan forgiveness for science teachers (I'll be certified in secondary general science/earth science) and it looks like there are a lot of opportunities to have your loans forgiven if you teach in low-income areas? --for the record, i planned on teaching in low income areas anyway -- does anyone have any experience with this, past what the government site can tell me? Because it almost seems too good to be true..
hitomimay Posted February 23, 2012 Posted February 23, 2012 I could be mistaken, but I remember looking up financial aid options last year, and you don't actually have to be science at all. You just need to be working at a low-income school that doesn't meet AYP for 5 years to have loan forgiveness.
jbriar Posted February 23, 2012 Posted February 23, 2012 Hey- I have friends working through their 5 years right now. Not only is the program legit, you can also defer your student loans all 5 years if your total in loans/interest is less than the 17,500 you'll receive at the end of the program. It is a great deal, and just another benefit of working with young folks. -J
CookiesForDinner Posted February 24, 2012 Author Posted February 24, 2012 that is awesome!! thanks for the insights. Unfortunately my loans will be over 17,500, but it will definitely help a lot down the road!
