gfl212 Posted March 1, 2012 Posted March 1, 2012 Hello, I am new to this forum, and I am hoping some of you can help me out. I have been admitted to one program so far, and am still waiting to hear back from everywhere else. I currently live in NYC and have been living here for five years, and my top choice grad program is Columbia-Teachers College. I have also applied to NYU and Fordham. I have been admitted to UPenn. I really want to stay in NYC. UPenn has a wonderful program, and I really liked the people I met when I went for an interview. My dilemma is this: if I get rejected from Columbia, but admitted to NYU and/or Fordham, where should I go?! Part of me thinks I should go to Penn because it is higher ranked, but another part of me thinks that if I want to eventually establish myself in New York, then I should go to a New York school so that I have the opportunity to network while in grad school. Does that make any sense? I think the obvious choice would be UPenn over Fordham because of rankings and reputation, but I feel strongly about staying in NYC and I am not sure what I would/should do if I get rejected from Columbia, but admitted to Fordham and/or NYU. Thoughts? Advice? Thanks for reading!
stephanopolis Posted March 1, 2012 Posted March 1, 2012 If you want to continue in research and teaching, I'd say go to UPenn because it's rare (sometimes impossible) for someone to be hired for a faculty position at the institution where s/he got the PhD. If you stayed in NYC you'd be eliminating one school for future work. Plus UPenn as you mentioned is highly ranked in the psych areas. If you want to go into practice, I'm sure going to TC would be fine for networking purposes like you said.
