I was offered a spot in UChicago's CIR Masters with 1/3 scholarship. Although I am definitely grateful and strongly want to attend, it would be very difficult for me to fund my studies there. I would have to live in my car parked outside the university. I am not kidding. I want to send them an email asking for more money. Sure, they said the scholarship is merit-based, but I have lots of updates on my CV since my application in November. For example, admission to PBK, completed honors thesis, TAship for a class, etc.

How should I approach this matter to them? Would my reasons asking for reconsideration of merit scholarship be sufficient?

I was in the same situation, but with Chicago's MAPSS programme (1/3 tuition offered). I emailed them and they replied and said the offer is final and not subject to change. I'm sure it's worth asking (they didn't seem to mind my email) especially if you think there are new things they don't know about, but from my experience it seems it's unlikely to yield any success.

Yeah, you certainly won't lose anything by asking. Though if I were you I might choose to wait for a little while, as some people offered funding for the course may turn it down, so they may be in a better position to offer you more funding by then. But that involves waiting, which we all have been doing far too much of by this point in the cycle.

Thank for you feedbacks! I just sent my email to Ms. Pollack asking for more money... Hope it works out!

P.S. If anyone reading this isn't considering Chicago's MA as future prospect, please reject their offer as soon as you can. Thanks! :)

I would have to eat only McMuffins for 9 months if they don't give me more money... :(

I finally heard back from CIR. They said that they simply have no more money, and they made more scholarship offers than they can manage since they expect majority of them will turn it down.

I guess I'll live in my car and eat McMuffins for 9 months!

Sorry, that sucks! Plus, McMuffins, while delicious, can be quite expensive. I'd stick to hashbrowns if I were you.
