Guys, I want to ask you something... I meet the mini-requirements for UC Berkeley.... The only thing that I am relying on is I am fully funded by my government... Do you think I have a chance in there ?

My stats:

Major GPA : 3.1/4

Overall GPA: 2.86/4

Gre: Q:150, V:146, AW: 3.5

Strong LOPs, a well written SOP and personal statement.

Zero work exp and research exp.

TOEFL: 85

As I said the only thing I am relying on is me being funded....

I honestly don't think Berkeley will take funding into consideration, although I could be wrong. I have heard that they are primarily looking for students with enough experience to have a foundation, but still be open to learning more and growing that foundation. I think your lack of experience will hurt you the most. I think the grades they could look past if you had great experience, but without that I don't think they would highly consider you unless you can bring something completely unique to the program.

Are you applying for an MSW or something else? Most of us here only know about Berkeley's MSW program

Just Curious, Which concentration did you apply to?

I want to be an elementary school social worker. My experience is as an AmeriCorps member working with that age group around the school system, and now I want to be able to work from within it. I'm really interested in better connecting students and their studies with their own families and communities.

I'm pursuing MAP. I have two areas of focus (of course that could potentially change). I want to advocate at the intersection of policy, legal advocacy and direct care for survivors of Domestic Abuse. I would like to do program development for preventative measures (such as education and awareness), and I would like to improve direct care surfaces to survivors by reforming some of the practices an policies and advocating for increased legal rights.

My second focus is to advocate for those (like myself) who suffer from severe food allergies. I would advocate for their rights in the workplace, government appropriations, and increased awareness of disability status.

Im not sure what that all looks like yet! I'm hoping to learn a lot during grad school and grow as an advocate and policy reformer/program developer!

There is a long journey for that and I don't expect to be able to tackle it all at once after grad school, but that's my life passion.

I just had a really awesome opportunity where I advocated to one of the Top 10 largest grocery stores how their product placement affects the ability of food allergy sufferes to buy groceries safely. Due to that advocacy, they are rolling out a new company wide policy change that will better serve over 50% of their allergy sufferers safely grocery shop without the risk of airborne particles causing reactions and mitigating croos-contamination on packaging!
