zillie Posted March 7, 2012 Posted March 7, 2012 I've been accepted into my top program, but am nervous as I have yet to receive ay information about funding. My POI and I have corresponded several times about my acceptance during the past two weeks, but he has not mentioned, or even hinted at, funding. He mentioned I should receive my official acceptance letter sometime this week through the mail (postal). My question is, are funding offers usually included along with the official acceptance or is it something my POI should have already mentioned? I don't want to bother him about funding questions if the info is already being mailed to me. If there is no funding info mentioned along with the official letter, how can I politely go about requesting how to apply for some? During my visit with the department, he mentioned they would be nominating me for fellowships, but I haven't heard anything since. Any help/advice would be appreciated!
TXTiger2012 Posted March 7, 2012 Posted March 7, 2012 To your first question, it depends. One school I have been accepted to specifically told me that any funding offers would be put forth in my official letter of admission (I've already gotten an unofficial e-mail). Another school only sends an acceptance letter, with funding handled separately since I applied for university-wide fellowships. If you aren't in a time crunch to notify any other schools about accepting/declining, my advice would be to wait until you get your official letter. If it has funding, then great (congrats)! If not, you have an acceptable springboard to contact your POI and ask about the timeline for notification of funding, if you're receiving it.
ktel Posted March 7, 2012 Posted March 7, 2012 Most of the profs I talked to discussed funding, or had me talk to the graduate secretary to discuss funding. My school is a bit different though, they require a certain level of funding for all admitted students depending on the department, and that info is written down in a documnet. I also had the funding detailed in my official offer.
new_to_kin Posted March 7, 2012 Posted March 7, 2012 Funding should be mentioned in your offer letter. If you're super keen, then I would contact the Graduate Program coordinator of your dept. They should have hte answers. For example, in my program, there is standard funding for everyone, unless you have a large external grant (like CIHR or NSERC). When I was at grad school in the US, it was negotiated on an individual basis (a private school).
