Guest clunis Posted March 20, 2006 Posted March 20, 2006 I'm heading to Michigan Linguistics. I literally can't wait.
Guest dym Posted March 21, 2006 Posted March 21, 2006 hey clunis, have you been looking for housing yet?
Guest herealready Posted March 26, 2006 Posted March 26, 2006 I'm already here, but I'll keep you company If you are looking for housing, your first stop should be the University's off campus housing website: http://www.offcampus.housing.umich.edu/ ... stings.cfm In general, expect to pay between $700-$800 for a one bedroom apartment, less if you are willing to take a room in a house. Pay attention to whether or not heat is included -- that can be very expensive here!
Guest Housingquest Posted March 27, 2006 Posted March 27, 2006 Is craigslist.com a reliable source to use for housing? I have used it with wonderful results in finding a place and roommates here in Berkeley, but I will most likely be going to UMich and will be looking for housing soon. When is the best time to start looking? What area would be the best to look in. I will be a graduate in Biomedical Engineering. And anyother pointers would be great, such as car or no car, furnished or not, etc.
Guest herealready Posted March 27, 2006 Posted March 27, 2006 I haven't used craigslist.com in Ann Arbor. The off campus housing website is the most useful resource. Start looking as soon as you can for the best selection. It's true that leasing season in Ann Arbor begins in October or November (well, actually, a new city ordinance may push it back to December or January), but one and two bedroom apartments are still available in the summer. (The big houses that groups of undergrads share tend to go first). Where to look depends on where your department/lab is located -- North or Central campus. In general, Kerrytown is a nice, quieter area about 15 minutes walk from Central campus. It's probably my favorite part of town, and lots of grad students live there. I think you'll limit your options if you look for furnished apartments. Having a car isn't essential, and there isn't enough parking to plan on driving to campus every day, but it's nice for grocery shopping and other errands. I have one and am glad of it.
