snewo09 Posted May 21, 2012 Posted May 21, 2012 Hi all, I'm getting ready to start applying to grad school this fall, and I was looking for some help finding programs. I'm finishing my BA in Media Arts, which at my school is focused on production- I've done classes in basic filmmaking, sound design, photography, new media art, animation, screenwriting, and an upcoming class on experimental film. However, for grad school I'm thining aobut going into to Film studies, and I was planning to apply to MA programs rather than PhD so I can get more research skills under my belt. I'm looking for programs that might have an international focus, particularly East Asian cinema if possible. Also, preferably not in NY or CA, unless someone knows somtething aboout financial aid that I don't. Also, does anyone think a production background will hurt my chances of getting in?
uromastyx Posted February 5, 2013 Posted February 5, 2013 Also, does anyone think a production background will hurt my chances of getting in? Do you have any courses in general film studies? Speak any additional languages? Also, it'd be best to submit a (strong) writing sample that displays an aptitude for film analysis. I was also looking into a few film programs.
nestwerk Posted February 6, 2013 Posted February 6, 2013 try critical studies masters at usc. it's in ca but it also fits your interest and they <3 bridging academics with production. (lots of former production students in the prog.) great trasnational profs. and a lot of asian cinema and media studies. they might have ta-ships or funding, too, tho usually just the second year. at the masters level, a production background won't hurt. it might actually help since you'll have a first-hand perspective on a lot of the material. you def. want to get the masters first, tho. phds will want to see research experience. also try ut-austin's radio, film, tv prog. and maybe northwestern's screen cultures.
