Writing a letter to request a scholarship

I am in the process of writing a letter for this scholarship. Does anyone have any ideas as to how I can write this effectively? What kind of things should I talk about?

What sort of scholarship? What do you mean by a "letter"? Most scholarships that I have applied to spell out what sorts of things they want you to say.
