Owen Orange Posted May 28, 2012 Posted May 28, 2012 Hello Everyone, A friend recommended this forum because I have a bit of a complicated situation and I really don't know who to ask. I have completed most of my MSW (I have a bachelor's in history, no BSW) at a social work school in the US but was expelled. I needed four courses plus my second field placement in order to complete my degree. After the expulsion and losing my appeal, I re-located back to Canada and currently reside in BC. I want to complete my degree but I'm unwilling to start over from scratch. Most Canadian programs need a BSW which I am unwilling to get. Personally I'm frustrated because I worked really hard to earn those grades and dropped to much money to simply start over again from nothing. My transcripts do not indicated my expulsion. I can't remember what the code means off the top of my head but it doesn't indicate that I failed or was expelled. I want to complete my MSW but I'm not sure how to go about it. I don't know if other schools will take those credits and difficult to think that those marks will simple count for nothing ever. Anyone have any advice or be able to recommend a program? For the record the expulsion was not based on anything substantive. The accusations were false as confirmed by the police and office of student conduct but it was just easier to get rid of me.
Thumper86 Posted May 28, 2012 Posted May 28, 2012 My advice would be start doing some research on programs that offer a 2-year MSW degree. There are actually quite a few (York, UofT, Laurier, Windsor, and University of Calgary are some of the ones that come to my mind right away) that you could look into. I would contact the SW departments at the schools that offer 2 year degrees and ask whether any of your credits would be transferable. I recommend starting this way and then narrowing down your selection to schools that will accept some of your credits. If none of the schools will accept your credits than you may have to suck it up and complete a 2-year program from scratch. I hope this is somewhat helpful. Good luck!
