Holly Guile Posted August 12, 2012 Posted August 12, 2012 I'm looking into what PhD programs I should apply to. My area is rhetoric and composition, and my emphasis would be the use of comic books (spec. superheroes) in the classroom. What programs are the most open to that? Or, at least pop-culture studies?
Adelaide Posted August 15, 2012 Posted August 15, 2012 I cannot help you with information but (if you haven't already) I suggest some determined Googling and inquiring with professors you know in your field that might know of programs open to that. Try to find scholarly books written about superheroes or comics or other related topics and see where the authors teach and possibly where they did their graduate work. Also, this topic should probably be moved to the Lit, Rhetoric and Composition board since has to do with applying.
claptrap Posted August 15, 2012 Posted August 15, 2012 I'm not sure whether OSU has a distinct rhetoric and composition program, but their English department is home to a number of professors (Frederick Aldama, Jared Gardner, and Robyn Warhol) that work with comic books. Additionally, OSU has the Billy Ireland Cartoon Library, which could/should be an invaluable resource for someone interested in popular culture. Hope this helps.
