umtto Posted August 28, 2012 Posted August 28, 2012 I got admission from grad school in one of school in Canada. Because there is no financial support, I cannot but defer for one academic year. My supervisor just approved my request of deferral. Here is my question. During 1 year, what can I do to get a financial support? Can I ask whether my professor change my admission condition after 1 year? If possible, I am willing to work few month in Lab of my professor as volunteer. Please give as many advice as you can. This is serious problem to me...
Usmivka Posted September 1, 2012 Posted September 1, 2012 MS or PhD? If an MS, this is unlikely to change regardless of what happens. As a PhD student you may have a little more hope. In one year, very little will change in terms of the money offered by the university unless you publish some great papers or get some nifty patents. Can you apply to any Korean government fellowships for study abroad? Good luck!
aberrant Posted September 3, 2012 Posted September 3, 2012 I would assumed that you are applying for a MS program since, as far as my understanding, many schools in Canada only accept students with a master degree for their PhD program. And, unfortunately, many schools do not offer funding for master students in Canada (that applies to a few international PhD students in separate occasion). If you cannot apply any fellowships from Korea to sponsor your education in Canada (goverment, Fulbright, etc.), you may consider applying PhD programs in the U.S. instead. You cannot do much other than improving your application package -- research experience, SOP, and probably GRE scores. Bottom line is that it will be difficult to get funding from your PI a year later if you are in a MS program. I could be wrong, but that's just my opinion.
