You really cannot get chances...the process is not completely predictable, and you have provided very little information (not even stating your GRE Q score, which is important for and science/math applicant). Work experience may or may not be helpful, depending on how well it demonstrates your ability to do research, and on how good your letters of recommendation will be (and even who writes them for you). If you are unable to apply to all five schools, perhaps you should pick the three you'd most like to go to. In any case, you should (and may already have done) research the work being done at each school to see how it matches your interests.

What kind of work experience? Are you aiming for a Ph.D. or a M.S.?

P.S. Austin is an amazing city to have a social life...and the tech job market there is fantastic.

wireless engineering; MS+Phd programs only. Def interested in graduating with MS after 2 years and then continuing on. I have heard that some universities do not confer MS until u finish ur Phd (not interested in these programs) What about University of Mass at Amherst?

Your stats are competitive for a Ph.D. Look carefully at the programs you want to apply to: some will value work experience more than others. As for getting the M.S. while in a Ph.D. program, you usually can ask for it once you've completed the requirements for the M.S. if you want, but just know that you'll be walking a fine line there. Your program might view you as applying for a Ph.D. (which usually comes with funding) and then just getting the M.S. (which is usually not funded). If your program funds you for a Ph.D., they would rather keep you all the way to the end than lose you with just a free M.S., unless of course you aren't cut out for a Ph.D. (which you will find out when you get to quals).

Hi All,

I am about to apply soon to the schools listed and was wondering if MIT is worth applying? I am also a US citizen if that matters.... 3 years of wireless experience (tier1 operators and vendors). I also have taken intermediate programming in undergraduate and also done object oriented coding in work exp as well....

Thanks,

What do you mean by "worth applying to"? You're not sure if you're qualified enough, so you're deciding whether it's better to self-select yourself out of MIT? Because I think it's a pretty incredible place.
