Legendre Posted September 5, 2012 Posted September 5, 2012 Before you guys burn me at the stake: I'm not from the USA, and I did my undergrad and masters in the UK. So, other than "famous" places like Princeton, Harvard, Yale, MIT, UPenn etc, I have no idea what the top tier schools are. E.g. I have only heard of Duke and University of Michigan recently. Question: How competitive is UCLA for Applied Mathematics PhD? Or rather, which "class" of schools does UCLA belong to, based on how hard it is to get in for a PhD in Applied Mathematics? I suppose "top tier" places like the Ivy League, UPenn, Chicago, MIT, Michigan, UC Berkeley etc belong in the same class. Then there are excellent but a little less competitive places like the University of Washington (Seattle), University of Texas (Austin), University of Illinois (UC). Where does UCLA lie?
ghanada Posted October 2, 2012 Posted October 2, 2012 Uhh UCLA is #2 in applied math on US News rankings. UCLA is a top tier school in pretty much every STEM field and like the previous commenter mentioned, it is top tier in the world, not just US. Not to mention the fact that the department includes Field Medal recipient Terence Tao.
