portfolio for MFA of graphic design( VCU,MICA,Calarts,RISD )

Hi,guys.I'm new here and I intend to apply to 3-year MFA graphic design programs for fall 2013.I am planning on applying to VCU,MICA,Calarts and RISD,but I'm a senior and I major in Animation in a University in China,so my problem is that I am a little confused about my portfolio,I mean,how do I make it better as I'm from a different background.Could you guys who have such experience give some advice for preparing portfolio?
