jls990 Posted September 29, 2012 Posted September 29, 2012 Hello all, Sorry to bog this forum down with another "What do you think my chances are of getting in?" post, but I'm desperate and could really use some perspective. Overall Undergrad GPA: 3.48 Major GPA: 3.49, in Psychology I do unfortunately have a few failed classes on my transcript. But they are science and math classes (not in my major) and I re-took a couple of them and raised my grades significantly. GRE: Taking it next month, but I am a strong standardized test taker and have been studying for months, so I am predicting that I will score well. Activities: -Volunteer at renowned children's rehab center; rotate between 6+ SLP's and have done training with communicative technology. I will have strong letters of recommendation from the SLPs at the facility. - Psychology research assistant at the university I just graduated from. - Psychology TA - Membership Alpa Phi Omega co-ed Service Fraternity - Catechism and Sunday School Teacher I am in MI, but I am definitely applying out of state. Any advice or opinions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you! -jls990
phonology_rocks Posted October 4, 2012 Posted October 4, 2012 Hey! Just to make you feel a little better.....I graduated with a 3.1 overall GPA (my undergrad was farrrr from perfect) but a 3.71 major GPA (for linguistics) I had one failed class on my transcript. Also, a science course which I re-took. I am a linguistics MA student right now, but as an undergrad I was a linguistics, french, and pyschology major. I have been interested in SLP but only since I got into my MA program (which might I add is at a very respected school and I was thrilled with the acceptance). y I have felt a little frusterated at myself for my late SLP interest, because doing it this way will take longer and stuff. My adivisor who is acutally from the SLP program at my school, told me I am so lucky to have a masters before I apply to SLP, because I will get into a better program and be more likely to get funded this way. Personally, she said that with a personal statement like I wrote, and a GRE score that "wasn't terrible', I was only looking at a mediocre SLP acceptance, had I tried to go that route. I do realize this is one persons opinion but I think the point is its going to work out, and I have taken the right steps to overcome my less then steller undergrad. As for you, SLP is competitive and includes some science (as I am sure you already know), and failed courses are not good, but if they are earlier on, and your recent grades are good, I'd think they wouldn't be significant. I think you should apply, do your best, and with a good application you could be okay. I do strongly believe that you should have a backup plan if you don't get in.....(in case), and I think that if you don't get in, you should try again.....after doing something to improve your application. Sorry I hope I helped .....and good luck!
