I did contact the admissions office early last week via e-mail; no one wrote back to me except to say that it was forwarded to Peter Baker. And I'm terrified to try calling Peter Baker himself; I tried with an application question last year, and he never got back to me then, either. Baker's got me feeling baked (oh, the puns I'm resorting to in this time of stress)..

Does anyone have any information concerning UVA's process of referring rejected Ph.D. students to the M.A. program?

I followed the advice on the application portion of the website, which said to indicate in your Statement of Purpose if you wanted to be considered for the masters upon rejection from the PhD program. I don't know how it works if you did not indicate this. But good luck to us both (and everyone on here! I feel like I know all of you already!).

Another "Pender" on this site emailed me privately and, after calling the department, found they were accepted for the Master.

Funded or unfunded, I don't know, but it seems that if you are pending and you don't get waitlisted in the next few days, expect an invitation to the MA program around March 15.

I'm the "pender" lol.

I actually don't think I've been "accepted" yet. Language was kindof ambiguous, but yes, "penders" should expect to hear some kindof reply from the MA program by March 15th.

Thanks for the info guys. And smart cookie, would you mind just giving a few details about your conversation with the person from the department? I don't mean to be annoying, but this is, for me, the first breath of perhaps-good-news in what has been a trying application season.

Don't die just yet, because in-state tuition is around 12k for grad students and out of state tuition is 22k for grad students.

But I'll die of happiness too, if it's a funded MA!

I just spoke to Colette Dabney (the admissions coordinator). From what I've gleaned, the "pending" status means only that your application is being reviewed by the committee who is making the masters decisions. Because UVA is a school that asks you to indicate whether or not you would like to be considered for the MA, then unless you did not indicate that and are still pending (which would imply they want to make an unsolicited MA offer to you), I think it's safe to say that, unfortunately, the "pending" status only signifies the fact that your application is being reviewed.

Well, shit.

I did not express that interest in my statement, though if there was a box, I'm sure I checked it.

(thanks for posting Bpr)

No Problem Yellow. There wasn't a box, they asked you to indicate your interest in the M.A. program in your SoP. So, if you're still pending, and indeed did not indicate your interest, looks like the ad com may have passed your app along to the M.A. committee themselves. Also, Colette said that while many admissions offers for the Ph.D. have been sent out, nothing is finalized yet (i.e. they may not be done making offers). So good luck to everybody, looks like we just have to play they waiting game for a bit longer.

Hey Guys, you really shouldn't be afraid to call Peter...he is a really, really great guy. And also don't be afraid to call Collette...she is super warm and cool as well...I do remember there being a box for the MA but you didnt get the choice to choose b/w the MA and the PhD...I actually accidentally checked the MA box and the department phoned me to make sure that I in fact wanted the PhD

Frankly, I find it embaressing for a "top ten school" not able to fund their PhD's in some way. How can you expect students to matriculate to the best of their abilities?

After reading what immersion said about Peter Baker being really nice, I called. My application ended up in the MA-exclusively pile and hasn't even been looked at yet. He said he'll look at it, have it considered for both, and I'll know by next week.

I was the world's happiest person yesterday when I thought everyone who was still "pending" was getting an MA offer.. now I'm regretting that there aren't more bridges around here.

And an unfunded MA (or PhD)? Eh. I mean, my public school in Ohio's in-state tuition is as much as UVa's out-of-state tuition. And I could handle a year or two of vouching for myself with (more) loans. Just let me in.. argh, I am so depressed.

This purported post by sheisawesome about an unfunded Ph.D. is either specious or a different category entirely than the one to which we're applying. The wait list letter I received from U-VA specifically said that if I receive an offer, and I quote, "it will include a fellowship package covering tuition, medical insurance, and a $20,000 stipend for either four or five years." So, I think we need not worry about VA not funding its Ph.D. students, at least. Sorry, I've got nothing on the MA front.

Nicholysses,

Thanks for putting my hasty conclusions into perspective.

I guess this thread tells us that all us Penders are still completely in the dark. Completely.

Hey Guys,

I hope everything works out for everyone but I'm not sure why you would want to go to a school which only have you four years of funding...Is that enough money to live off?

It is for me. I'm old, and may not even live 5 more years.
