jong_pk Posted October 11, 2012 Posted October 11, 2012 Hi, I just took GRE and received unofficial score(v-150,Q-158). Currently, I'm studying Electrical Engineering at UTD and have overall GPA 3.8/4.0. I have participated in a research in semiconductor area for a year and I'm focusing on my senior design project instead of doing the research under a professor(I want to concentrate in Analog circuit area). I'm planning to apply to UCB, Standford, UCS, UCLA, UC Santa barbara, UT austin, and A&M for the fall semester 2013. I know that my GRE score is not enough when it compares to other graduate candidates.. However, I'm just little bit hoping that the admission offices don't consider GRE score too much for graduate students. Is it possible to get into those top engineering schools with my score if I prepare a decent statement of purpose and recommendation letters? English is not my first language and I have spent most of time to study verbal section instead of math and I'm so embarrassed about my math score. I need some advices from you guys!! Thank you!
Darth.Vegan Posted October 11, 2012 Posted October 11, 2012 That is an 1190 on the old scale, so that is sort of low. Ideally for top programs you want 1300+ but above 1200 may be sufficient. That's not to say that you can't get in to a good program with that score if the rest of your app is strong, but it does hurt a bit. I actually got the exact opposite score on my power prep practice yesterday V:158 and Q:150, which comes out to a 1210 on the old score. Your quant score is 74th percentile, you may want to retake and try to get it above 80th for engineering programs, your verbal while low, may not matter as much. Above 80th would only be a 2 point increase (160), seems very doable.
