Firefly754 Posted October 18, 2012 Posted October 18, 2012 I'm currently an undergraduate at a state school majoring in History who will be graduating in the Spring. I have a 3.9 GPA and a research project I did is being published. I am also a research assistant on another project that will (hopefully) be published in the Spring. I want to pursue a PhD in History to teach at the community college level. My top choice grad school only offers admission to their PhD program to those with an M.A in History or a related field. My current university does not offer an M.A in History. They do offer an M.A in an interdisciplinary Social Sciences field. The professor who helped get my research published is both a Prof. in the Hist. Dept and Chair of the interdisciplinary program. Now it was suggested to me that I consider the M.A here, even though it is not an M.A in History. At first I brushed the suggestion off but after thinking about it I am starting to reconsider. I have a lot of academic independence here. If I apply to the M.A program here I'm almost certain I will have funding and that I will be a TA for History classes. I have two projects, with faculty support, that could easily turn into an M.A thesis. I will have support as far as publishing... This is something I intend to discuss with people here at my University but I wanted to get some outside opinions also. Given the circumstances, will pursuing an M.A in a related discpline significantly lower my chances of admission to a PhD program in History?
