haphy Posted November 6, 2012 Posted November 6, 2012 Hi I'm looking for programs that focus on art education. Is anyone else out there looking at Art Ed? Its hard to find information on schools which have a good program for Art Education. Most rankings are fore MFA programs. I don't want the program to be too academic and theoretical, focusing on the teaching artist. I'm looking at schools which have a strong art department but provide a lot of funding, so there aren't any private art schools on my list. I am also considering MFA programs and getting certified to teach separately. However, my main goal is not necessarily to be a professional artist but to teach. Sure, I'd like to teach in college level but I'm just as inspired by teaching in K-12 and think its a lot more practical job security wise. I have a BFA from MICA and have been out of school for 10 years teaching art abroad so I figured I would be more likely to get into an art ed program since I've been out of the art world for awhile. The schools I am looking at are: MAT or MArt Ed. Programs: Virginia Commonwealth University Tyler School of Art University of Texas at Austin University of North Texas University of Arizona CUNY Brooklyn MFA Programs: Tulane University of Oregon Rutgers Tyler Any suggestions?
woodc Posted November 7, 2012 Posted November 7, 2012 Hi haphy, Have you looked at MassArt or Maine College of Art. They both have programs that are relatively inexpensive. MassArt has a couple paths and some great resources. Also, Univ of Utah has an MFA in Community Art Education that sounds pretty great. RISD's art education programs are only one year long. So, the tuition might sound more affordable. Have fun! c
haphy Posted November 8, 2012 Author Posted November 8, 2012 Thanks for the advice! I'll look into those! I was also looking at University of Oregon. They don't have a MAT program but their MFA program looks great and inexpensive. Do you have any insight? (I see that you're in OR)
woodc Posted November 9, 2012 Posted November 9, 2012 I don't know much about the program except that the people i've spoken with seem to have enjoyed it. Check out the work of the professors and students, if you haven't already, and see if anything speaks to you. The only MAT program for art education in OR seems to be at Lewis and Clark College in Portland. The program looks pretty great. You have to choose between elementary and middle school or middle school and high school. If you want something more comprehensive(meaning K-12) Tyler or MassArt might be better suited to your needs. Hope that helps.
