nada.am Posted November 11, 2012 Posted November 11, 2012 The Temple English Department website talks rather vaguely about funding: "Students are encouraged to apply for teaching awards, which include a tuition waiver and a stipend for the nine months of the academic year. Conditions of the award are determined by the graduate student union (TUGSA) contract with Temple University and currently require recipients to teach either as an assistant in a large lecture course or as the sole instructor of composition or literature courses. Applications are submitted along with admission applications." I can't seem to find this funding application that's supposed to be submitted. Can anyone help?
thestage Posted November 11, 2012 Posted November 11, 2012 I was actually just looking at Temple yesterday, and the same vagueness got to me. I did a search on this very site and it seems to me the school just tries to get funding for a portion of its cohort, with no guarantees. and by "tries to get funding" I mean "fails miserably, doesn't communicate with anyone, and then eventually gets back to you after april 15th." They're off my list.
Stately Plump Posted November 13, 2012 Posted November 13, 2012 I would email the department for clarification. Ask them about the process and also ask about the percentage of students who receive funding, what that funding looks like, etc.
hashslinger Posted November 13, 2012 Posted November 13, 2012 (edited) Temple has a really bad reputation for jerking people around about funding. See this thread from a few years ago: There are some real horror stories floating around about funding at Temple English. Edited November 13, 2012 by hashslinger
nada.am Posted November 15, 2012 Author Posted November 15, 2012 Thanks guys. I'm going to try emailing them and see if I get any clarification. If not I might have to rethink it a bit.
