What kind of linguistics and is it MA or PhD? I want to go for theoretical (syntax) and possibly switch to computational down the road. I also want to live on the West Coast. So I'm looking at Washington, Oregon, Berkeley, UC Santa Barbara, and UC Santa Cruz.

I'm interested in syntax but also syntax-pragmatics-- and I clearly want to stay on the east! I'd say UCSB, for you, probably ins't the best fit since they do way more ling anth than theoretical-- but santa cruz is awesome! I kind of want to apply just because....

(I'm applying to PhD-- what about you?)

I'm considering an MA/MSc in Germany, for a number of reasons, but does anyone care to suggest master's programs in the US? My research in undergrad has been largely theoretically oriented (I investigated the correspondence between LF and PF representations of information structure in generative grammar), but I want to use my master's years to become more proficient with experimental methods in psycholinguistics and L1 acquisition. I know CUNY has a terminal master's program, i.e., one offered without admission to the doctoral program, but does anyone know of others?

I think UChicago also has a terminal Masters program. University of Hawaii does as well.

Tanner, University of Colorado at Boulder has a terminal master's program.

And as of tonight, I'm considering applying to it!

I would consider Syracuse. It is a great MA program if you want to better yourself prior to a Phd because not only do you get graduate work experience but you also get exposure to a variety of areas so you can change your mind prior to the PhD commitment. Having said that you do pick a concentration and there is theoretical linguistics, but also other areas that give you career options outside of a PhD. Also, they fund people (some at least it helps if you speak a forigen langauge too) message me if you have any other questions :)

Hello, I'm interested in functional linguistics, specifically things having to do with formulaic language and discourse analysis. I'm applying to PhD programs. So far I have it narrowed down to CU Boulder, U Texas Austin, Rice, UC Santa Cruz, and possibly UCSB, UCSD. I'm open to other possibilities, but I like the faculty and research focuses at those universities. I'm not opposed to East Coast schools, but most of them don't really focus on functional linguistics.
