I have an essay that i am really stuck on. Can anyone shed some light on What is the difference between conditioned and free allophonic variation?

Lets assume for simplicity that we are talking about a morpheme that has two allophones.

Free variation: The two forms can be used in the same environments with no restrictions.

Conditioned variation: There is a rule that governs when one form is used and when the other one is used.
