Contacted by prof. instead of admissions dept.

Hi everyone,

 

I'm applying to BME PhD programs and received an email directly from a professor regarding my application, saying he was interested and would like to discuss it. I was expecting a call or email from the department regarding interviews. Is this a normal occurrence in the application process?

I would take this as a positive sign. Globally, I am not sure how frequently this happens but I have had friends in BME PhD programs in Canada (Montreal, Toronto) who also received calls from professors at the schools to which they applied.
