if i get straight across the board rejections and want to beef up my application for next year, how can i get research experience (the one thing my app is clearly missing) without actually being a student at the moment?

i'm in math/applied math.

Research assistant/tech positions. I'm not sure how this works in math, but in life sciences there are tons of these. To apply, just email professors you'd be interested in working with and ask if they are looking.

Right what the above poster said! Also check the job listings on university websites. Sometimes they post research assistant positions there.

To add to the above comments, try checking out listserv messages for professional organizations in your field. Often times there will be postings seeking research assistants or summer research internships. These opportunities, particularly if they are affiliated with well known professors in your field, offer an excellent way to secure a strong LOR.

Also, sometimes just contacting a professor independently and expressing your willingness to work as a research assistant, will land you a spot with someone.

Good luck!
