Stanford MS Aero/Astro

I have a simple question to ask. When I applied to Stanford for their MS in Aero/Astro I was asked to choose my preferencial research fields. 

 

I did this, but I am wondering why? Their MS is taught only. No research. So why bother asking for this? Especially since funding and RA's are so hard to come by in Stanford.

 

Also, on a separate note I was accepted and I am wondering whether to pay $1000 to visit (I would really like to) if I cannot afford to go without funding. I would be going to show my face and persuade someone to fund me, but I'm not sure how likely this is to happen!
