Canator Posted February 2, 2013 Posted February 2, 2013 Anyone know anything about the University of Illinois Classics program? I heard it had some troubles with faculty members but that those issues have now been resolved. It's a small department, clearly, but does anyone know if they're adding more professors? Do their graduates have success on the job market?
ἠφανισμένος Posted February 3, 2013 Posted February 3, 2013 Yeah, there were some retirements and/or departures that decreased the size and strength of the program. I believe they did interviews for a Latin literature position at APA this year for a fall 2013 start. They've added a couple of visiting profs in the last couple of years. I don't know anything about placement, though.
Pius Aeneas Posted March 3, 2013 Posted March 3, 2013 I attended one of the other Illinois campuses for undergrad, and the Head of Classics there discouraged me from applying to Urbana for graduate school. He cited the same reasons mentioned above, namely the decline in overall quality of the program due to professors leaving and retiring. I know one person from undergrad who is currently attending the program, but I haven't spoken with him in ages to have any inside knowledge.
