Fleet23 Posted February 9, 2013 Posted February 9, 2013 This is probably an extremely ignorant question, and I apologise, but I must ask nonetheless. Are there many opportunities for joining research projects as a masters student? I know that HGSE has the field experience program, but I cannot find much at the other schools I've applied to. There is a project I am interested in at Vanderbilt, but I was told they only accept PhD students. Is this fairly common?
emg28 Posted February 10, 2013 Posted February 10, 2013 I believe it depends on the institution and department. I spoke to a current student at TC and he told me the research he's doing was by his own doing. He sought out the people and made it work. The program he's in (MA in Higher Ed) doesn't include research opportunities as a requirement or part of the curriculum. Maybe at the most, research methods. On the other hand, I know some schools I applied to give research opportunities to Masters students if they're interested. It won't be funded or count as a GA as PhD students but at least the opportunity exists. I would email the program or ask current students if it's common or possible for people in their cohort to do research. Is the process informal? Or do you have to apply? Hope that helps! Best of luck.
