Matt12710 Posted February 22, 2013 Posted February 22, 2013 How important is writing a thesis if someone plans to apply to doctoral programs in the future? Some master's programs have a thesis or non-thesis option. I can see the pros and cons of each, but would a thesis be the best option because it shows research ability and experience? Or does it matter? A thesis isn't the only kind of research experience. Insight is appreciated.
Willows Posted February 22, 2013 Posted February 22, 2013 I applied and have been accepted without a thesis. That said, if I were going the MA route, I would do the thesis option. It's more than just showing ability and research, it can help you discover where your interests are -- or better yet, where they aren't. In many cases, you can build on the thesis your thesis instead of starting from scratch at the doctorate level, which is naturally a good thing when multiple PhD programs give you less time to finish and/or funding for fewer years if you come in with a Master's. Matt12710 Posted February 22, 2013 Author Posted February 22, 2013 Did you apply without a master's and just with a B.A.? Or did you earn a non-thesis master's?
heathenist Posted February 22, 2013 Posted February 22, 2013 My program doesn't have a "thesis," but instead, it's a "master's research paper." It's still original research, but it's much shorter and you don't have to defend it (though you still need a committee). I like this option for a few reasons; less stressful, less work, but most importantly, the finished product is closer to being a publishable paper than a thesis would be. So with a thesis, my impression is, you do quite a bit more work/writing, but then have to cut it down if you want it published. With a master's paper, you can submit it to journals when your done and you still have research experience. However, if the option is between doing a thesis, or taking some type of comprehensive exam, I'd go with the thesis for the research experience.
Willows Posted February 22, 2013 Posted February 22, 2013 (edited) Did you apply without a master's and just with a B.A.? Or did you earn a non-thesis master's? Just a Bachelor's + independent research. I did consider several MA programs at one point, and I chose schools that had "PhD placement" tracks, which of course urge you to write a thesis. I can PM you a few if you want! Edited February 22, 2013 by Willows
