Cactus Ed Posted March 4, 2013 Author Posted March 4, 2013 Hi Cactus Ed! Yes! I received a call from the Director of Admissions last night. They accepted me! Have you heard anything? Congrats! I haven't heard anything yet. I heard somewhere they hadn't finished sending out acceptances, but I'm not sure how accurate that is. I'm wondering if I'm gonna be waitlisted. It would be strange if they sent out two rounds of rejections, but maybe they did... Fingers crossed here. dorotheabrooke 1

I'd like to think that they would contact you soon--it does seem strange to keep people waiting without an official wait list. Cactus Ed 1
Cactus Ed Posted March 5, 2013 Author Posted March 5, 2013 Well, I was told by email that I was a finalist but was ultimately not offered admission. I'm wondering if my lack of teaching experience seriously hurt my chances and made it harder to get into those 2-3 funded, non-teaching GTF slots. I'm super disappointed, but congrats to dorotheabrooke and all the others who made it! ... I'm trying to focus on the positives: in at ASU and high on the waitlist at Tufts. Tempe and Medord aren't Eugene, but those are both great programs. Best of luck to everyone going to Oregon!

Tufts was my top choice, but I was rejected flat out! Grrrr...

Hey, what do you think is going on with CU Boulder, btw? I've heard nothing but have seen rejections and acceptances alike up on the results board. I heard somewhere they have an unofficial waiting list that they don't often tell people about, meaning folks are randomly accepted in late March/early April. Maybe that's just me being optimistic. No_foam, we have a pretty similar list of schools, don't we?

At least the email was personal and really nice - DGS commented on the strength of one of my papers, which surprised me. Best of luck to all going to U of O and to everyone making decisions
spartaca Posted March 7, 2013 Posted March 7, 2013 I was just accepted to Oregon via a very nice phone call from the DGS. There's a lot that sounds great, but I'm a little concerned about the funding. Since I'm not a trained Comp instructor, my first year funding is much lower than in later years. Does anyone have an idea how livable 11,500 is in Eugene? I currently attend UO, and I would say that 11,500 is tight-but-livable in Eugene. It really depends on the expenses you'll bring with you. Unfortunately, the state of grad funding is such that most humanities students end up incurring additional debt. I do know a few people who don't/won't take out loans, and they do make it work. There's affordable housing, multiple free and accessible transit options, and even a handful of grad co-ops if you're amenable to sharing space with others. Feel free to PM me if you have any questions.
