Hi,

I wanted to know if international students graduating with either a Master of Science (MS) or Professional Science Masters (PSM) degree in Biotechnology, obtain jobs post degree completion?

Also, what are the channels through which students apply to? Do firms offer part-time internships during summer breaks for biotechnology international students?

What are the things one should keep in mind, before starting with the Master's degree.

Any response is appreciated. Thanks in advance! :)

So I applied to the PSM Biotechnology at Penn State, and I did a phone interview with them. I took the opportunity to ask the interviewer about what the graduate students do, and she told me that pretty much all of the 130-something graduates they've had so far have found positions, most of them in research & development in various companies. That particular program guarantees a 6-month paid internship, so I imagine many of them find a job through connections at the internship. Ultimately I think it depends on the program you attend, the opportunities you find through that program, and exactly what part of biotechnology you're interested in (i.e. pharma, agriculture, etc.)

Hi forksandknives, I did biotechnology too as my first degree. After biotechnology you can work in a small startup biotech company or a large pharma. Usually pharma companies want some experience for a permanent position, but most of them have summer camps. I would recommend that you contact them directly, ask if you can support them as a technician during summer months- they are usually short of staff as everybody is on holidays. Have a look at those personal job experiences, for instance researcher at big pharma , it will give you a flavour of how a typical day looks like, what the recruitment process is like and what the benefits/ salary is. Let me know if this helps
