Hi guys,

I was accepted into a graduate program today. I received several emails from the program, including a personal congratulatory message from the graduate director (who is also a POI) that I have corresponded with previously.

I thought I would acknowledge his very nice message, but I'm afraid I let it slip that I was accepted to another program, which I also mentioned by name. Did I create a bad impression here? He answered me back with unsolicited advertisement of his department, etc, and asking me to please give their program serious consideration. You know stuff that I already knew. I didn't intend for our communication to go in that direction, and it was entirely my fault. I am indeed seriously interested in that program, but it isn't my top choice per se, as I am waiting to hear back from several other schools.

Am I overreacting here? Any suggestions of what to write back at this point?

From what I've gathered, its usually favorable for you to mention that you've been extended offers of admission elsewhere. it shows that you are a competitive applicant, if anything. I've been specifically asked from the schools I was accepted at where else I've been accepted and if I've been offered funding. It gives them a chance to negotiate funding and discern how likely you are to accept admission. As to what to respond, I would just stress that you are excited about the program, you are of course considering it, and will let them know ASAP.

What did you say in response to the congratulatory email? I guess I don't understand how you'd accidentally mention something you shouldn't have. When I got a congratulations email from the adcomm, I simply replied with "thank you, this is great news!"

Having said that, I don't think this is a big deal. They made you an offer and it's not like they're gonna rescind it. Just wait till 4/15 and officially respond to the offer.

He just means to say, "Sure, that other program wants your fabulous talents as well.  BUT WE ARE BETTER AND PLEASE CHOOSE US."  The ball is in your court for the next month-point-five  So enjoy it and weigh the decision very carefully (and tactfully! for these people will likely be voting on your tenure 15 years from now, haha)
