clydeyo12 Posted March 16, 2013 Author Posted March 16, 2013 ASHA accreditation is different than Middle States Commission on Higher Education accreditation. Middle States is the governing body that determines whether the school as a whole is accredited. If a school lost their MSCHE accreditation, they would also lose their ASHA certification. I'm pretty sure ASHA awards accreditation in cycles of 8 years or so, so the info you found refers to that. Every ASHA-accredited school gets reviewed periodically. Kean's SLP program has a good reputation, it was the school as a whole that was temporarily in question.
slpgal123 Posted March 16, 2013 Posted March 16, 2013 Thanks, that's great to know . It definitely makes me feel better about Kean's accreditation
clydeyo12 Posted March 16, 2013 Author Posted March 16, 2013 Sure. Sorry for the long-winded answer! I like the program so I had to put in my 2 cents =)
hopefulslp88 Posted March 16, 2013 Posted March 16, 2013 Ugh! Well, I know that Kean said 3-5 weeks and it's been 6 already...what gives?! I noticed that 2 people have already posted rejections to Kean, but I haven't seen anything else. My friend applied there last year and she said it was the last school she heard from.
clydeyo12 Posted March 16, 2013 Author Posted March 16, 2013 Yea I noticed that too. Thought it was strange.
slpgal123 Posted March 16, 2013 Posted March 16, 2013 I had only noticed the one rejection but just searched and saw that you're right. Maybe we can take it as a good sign to not hear anything then? I'll try to be optimistic haha. Are you surprised we haven't heard anything from LIU-Brooklyn too? Last year the first acceptance showed up on the results board on February 15th! Ms.slp 1

Last year the first acceptance showed up on the results board on February 15th! This is my second year applying so I am not surprised that I haven't heard from LIU-Brooklyn. I was told via phone that I was on the waitlist and then I received my rejection the day before my birthday last year (5/10). I did know people who were accepted though and found out last February. The only reason I am not surprised we haven't heard back yet is because all NY schools were allegedly suppose to notify all applicants at the same time. This is what I was told at my NYMC interview and I can't help to think that it may be true because we haven't heard from most NY schools yet and last year people heard much earlier. Ms.slp 1
slpgal123 Posted March 16, 2013 Posted March 16, 2013 Aww I'm sorry to hear about the rejection right before your birthday last year . That's so disappointing! Hopefully you'll be getting better news this year. That's very interesting, I didn't realize that the NY schools are supposedly supposed to notify applicants all around the same time. In that case I guess once that starts happening the results board will be blowing up!

I'm not too nervous yet, I mean I definitely have my moments of OMG what if I don't get in, but then I talk myself down because I still have so many schools to hear from. All I need is one acceptance.... just one lol Congrats on the acceptances! Who knows, maybe we will be classmates! I really liked Adelphi, I have friends who are there now! slpgal123 Posted March 16, 2013 Posted March 16, 2013 Yes, you only need one . I really think it's going to work out for you. That being said, I'd love if the NY/NJ schools would just start notifying already haha. Put everyone out of their misery! As much as there haven't been many notified from NY, there are even fewer who have been notified from NJ. Eventually they'll all start rolling in I guess.

Haha that's what my spring break's been! I'm heading back to school tomorrow, where the wait shall continue. I wonder if we'll hear from any of these before Easter....
tlsstc Posted March 17, 2013 Posted March 17, 2013 Does anyone know if all the cunys require interviews? If so that will definitely drag out the notification process.
slpgal123 Posted March 17, 2013 Posted March 17, 2013 Does anyone know if all the cunys require interviews? If so that will definitely drag out the notification process. It looks like I have an interview for CUNY Brooklyn that I just found out about, but I don't know if they actually require them. And I haven't heard anything about an interview for Hunter, so I don't know about Hunter or any of the others.

slpgal123 Posted March 17, 2013 Posted March 17, 2013 Ummm... well it's very odd. This morning my email got hacked (spam sent to everyone ugh) and to change my password I had to log into this really old alternate email address that I haven't used since middle school. And in this email address.... I saw multiple emails from Brooklyn College about an interview that I apparently have this upcoming Friday. But I missed the deadline to accept the interview (since this isn't an email address I check or an email address I gave them....), so I'm going to call tomorrow. That email address got emails with usernames and passwords using my first and last name... so it was definitely meant for me I just don't understand how they got that email address. But story aside, the email originally came through 3/5 saying I needed to confirm by 3/11, and then got a second email 3/12 that was like a "last call" email. So we'll see if they'll still let me interview! I'm hoping since they didn't email the email address that I provided... that they'll let me reschedule it.

I definitely know that CUNY Lehman, Queens, and Brooklyn require interviews. I am not sure about Hunter, I don't think they do but I could be wrong. I did my undergrad at Brooklyn College, if anyone has questions.

How did you like Brooklyn College for your undergrad/do you know much of their reputation for their speech path program? Pretty much anything that stands out to you about the program that's not available on their website I'd love to hear.
slp1485 Posted March 18, 2013 Posted March 18, 2013 Hi all! I also got into NYU. Does anyone plan to go to the admitted students event on April 4? I'd have to fly in and miss class (I'm doing a post-bacc year right now), and I'm just wondering if it's worth it. I've never visited, though, and would like to get a feel for the program. It's odd, because there are a few posts floating around Grad Cafe and that Speech Pathology "live journal" site (http://speechpathology.livejournal.com/) that seem to question the reputation of NYU - I think one post suggested it was in danger of losing its accreditation. I can't seem to get any specifics, though!! The website and the webinar I attended make the program seem really great - so I can't figure out what that's about. Has anyone else seen this/does anyone know more about this? Lastly - I called Hunter College to ask about notification timing, and the girl who answered told me "I think I heard in late April." Obviously, that's after the April 15 deadline! How does everyone plan to handle this? I guess just put down the $500 deposit at NYU, and if I get into CUNY, take the loss? By the way - congrats to all on NYU - perhaps we'll be classmates! LHS 1

On the results board, last year everyone posted hearing back between March 30th and April 12th (excluding waitlist offers). So I'm crossing my fingers that we'll be notified before the 15th when other deposits are due.
slp1485 Posted March 18, 2013 Posted March 18, 2013 Ooh, good detective work. I hope that's the case this year too!

By the way - congrats to all on NYU - perhaps we'll be classmates! I think it'll be worth it to miss class for a day or two to visit if you are really considering NYU as an option. Unless there's an exam or an important assignment due that day, I can't see how it will negatively affect your class grade that badly. I'll be missing class too but I'm currently finishing up my undergrad and my professors allow us to have 3 "free" days which I haven't used yet. It helps that it's only a 45 min train ride from my school and I don't have classes on Friday though. I've never heard anything about NYU losing its accreditation. As for the reputation, it depends if you mean "prestige" of the school/program or quality of the school/program. I don't think prestige should matter as long as the faculty is excellent and the curriculum prepares you well. If the quality is lacking, I would be worried but if you can't find any info about it, I wouldn't worry too much. Bad news does travel fast after all, I'm sure it would have came up in your search. Personally, I like the program at NYU and I think its "personality" fits me and what I want to study. It's in a large city, close to home but not too close (Seton Hall is a 10 min walk from my house, didn't even consider applying there ), and they offer courses that look really interesting like the one on Baby Trachs. I also like how they offer a summer abroad program as well. The only downside is that NYU is super expensive for me (I need to go for 3 years since I don't have pre-reqs). I have to get in touch with someone at the financial aid office soon.
