newlyaccepted Posted March 14, 2013 Posted March 14, 2013 Hi All, I was just accepted into two master's programs in DC. The first is Georgetown University for Arab Studies and the other American University for International Peace and Conflict Resolution. Both schools are extremely expensive and I did not receive any scholarships or funding. Arab Studies is the program I really wanted but Georgetown's tuition is $40,000 while American University is $18,000. I would appreciate any advice in regards to which program has a better future, since I will probably be paying off a massive loan for the remainder of my life, I think it would be wise to go with the program that has better prospects. Any and all advice is welcome, thank you.
zapster Posted March 14, 2013 Posted March 14, 2013 what kind of a job / future are you working towards...?
szero Posted March 14, 2013 Posted March 14, 2013 You could ask each school if they have any data on what careers (and percents) graduates of that program go on to.
JungWild&Free Posted March 18, 2013 Posted March 18, 2013 I think it really depends on what career you are going into as zapster mentioned. If you are going to be making a ton of money, then it might be worth it to go to Georgetown if you think it will get you to that career. But people often say don't go into debt for grad school. This may be less of a consideration for people going into Medicine, Law or Business where there is major cash to be made. Also, it's hard to say which program is better since grad school rankings are so different from undergrad rankings and the programs seem to be comparable enough. You can probably consult with professors you know in the field and get a better picture about how much better the program fit is for you. I wouldn't take on a ton of debt just for a graduate degree if it isn't going to accomplish your long-term career and financial goals, though.
