shamohaizhe Posted March 17, 2013 Posted March 17, 2013 I am a student from China and want to study furhter for a PhD in linguistics in US. I really need some suggestions to help me to choose the universiity. My interest is computational linguistics.I will get a master in corpus linguistics next year. My GPA is about 3.7. My GRE score is 158+170+3.5 and my TOFEL is 110. The school I am studying in is not very famous, which is one of my disadvantages. I have been a part -time English teacher for half an year.Which university in US fits me? I want to apply for Stanford, Upenn, Northwestern, Cornell, Rice, Georgetown, Brown, UCSD, Maryland, Umass. Do you have any advice for it?
Guest ||| Posted March 17, 2013 Posted March 17, 2013 Why are you interested in "Stanford, Upenn, Northwestern, Cornell, Rice, Georgetown, Brown, UCSD, Maryland, Umass" In any case What is it about linguistics that interests you? What do you want to study, pursue, specialize in - and then what school will best help you achieve this? What can you reasonably afford, will going to a less wanted school that offers funding vs a more wanted school without funding be a factor for you? Along with this, consider cost of living. Some cities will of course cost more to live in than others, what is realistic for you? Once you have these set, begin by looking into universities and see what kind of research they do and the faculty they have. Consider contacting faculty members whose interest aligns with yours - see if they are accepting students or not. Consider the universities admission statistics, what kind of grades will you need, is that program likely to accept students in the coming years or will competition be incredibly stiff. Etc etc etc.
