ec86 Posted March 14, 2009 Posted March 14, 2009 Hi everyone, Not sure where best to ask this question, but are MPhils awarded if you are ABD status even if you go on to complete your PhD?
Dubya Posted March 14, 2009 Posted March 14, 2009 Depends on the university. Some give MPhils (or at UCSD I think they have CPhils) and some give nothing. Furthermore, at some universities (like Oxford and Cambridge) an MPhil is a regular master's degree...equivalent to an MA or MS.
ec86 Posted March 14, 2009 Author Posted March 14, 2009 I guess in the States, it's a so-called "en-route" degree. Do you know if receiving an MPhil while pursuing a PhD is advantageous in any way, shape or form when one already has a master's degree?
Dubya Posted March 14, 2009 Posted March 14, 2009 Honestly, no. If you have an MA and are working on a PhD then there's no need for an MPhil. They're mainly there for those that don't finish...kinda like a consolation prize.
OnceAndFutureGrad Posted March 15, 2009 Posted March 15, 2009 At University College Cork, in the Early & Medieval Irish department, an MA is a one-year programme involving a 40 000 word thesis, while an MPhil is a two-year with a 60 000 word thesis. A PhD is three years but I don't know the dissertation length. You can go to postgraduate study for any of these individually.
