Mflynn423 Posted March 26, 2013 Posted March 26, 2013 Hi All- I was accepted to UW-Madison and attended their open house earlier in March. I am pretty sure I will be attending in the fall and was wondering if anyone else will be moving their from out of state like me (currently at Purdue) or if anyone has recommendations about finding roommates and places to live?
g1slp Posted March 27, 2013 Posted March 27, 2013 Hi! I'm out of state too but I've heard some things through the grapevine that might help you out. I remember at the open house a grad student recommended emailing Maureen Garity and telling her you need a roommate, and she will put you in touch with other students. Or, you could always try Craigslist if you want to live with someone outside the SLP program. I think most people live relatively close to Goodnight (like within a 10 minute walk - I've heard the meters are really expensive so not many drive, and there is of course a bus system)). I'm deciding between a few schools so I'm not totally committed to Madison yet, but if I figure anything else out re: housing I'll let you know!
badgerina Posted March 28, 2013 Posted March 28, 2013 Goodnight Hall is on the far west end if campus, and other than the dorms there aren't any places in that close of a walking distance. The campus bus line stops there. The near west side would be the best, near Engineering or Camp Randall would be the closest, otherwise the city busses from the west side all go through campus. In fact, with the way Madison is set up, busses from the east, west, north, and south sides all have multiple stops on campus. I live on the far south side and take the bus to campus every day, it's a 25 minute ride, and students are provided with free bus passes. The west side is definitely the nicest area to live in as well, followed by the east side, then the north and south sides. Popular rental companies are MPM, JSM, Steve Brown, JEK, and some smaller ones you can google. The further you are from campus, the cheaper the apartments. Having a car is nice for groceries, but driving to campus is not a good plan. Meters are $1.50 an hour, if you get a spot. Madison transit is reliable and ok to use to get to and from campus. Biking is also great in Madison, though a bit cold in winter (not that that stops anyone!) If you want more specifics let me know! If I get off the waitlist I'll definitely be attending Madison! Otherwise it's off to Milwaukee
vogelein Posted April 16, 2013 Posted April 16, 2013 Hey! I just confirmed at UW-Madison. Did any of you end up deciding to go that way too? Does anyone know if there is a facebook group or anything? I'm just excited to get started and meet people:)
