deadwilder Posted April 1, 2013 Posted April 1, 2013 Hello, I am an international student who works mostly with new media/photography and I got into Bard and Parsons. Since I am not 100% familiar with education in the U.S. I thought I should ask you for a tip or two, since I'm currently not sure which program to choose. I believe it's hard to compare Bard to any program since it's completely different structurally, but with that mind, how does it stand in comparison to Parsons? I am particularly skeptical about it's short length - I wonder if it's not a better program for people who have to work throughout the year or who don't have time for a full-time program. I'm looking for the most intense education I can get for my MFA. Someone commented I could accept both offers and not attend one for one year or semester. Is this really possible? Or is there a way I could defer one of the offers and in case the program I chose proves to be the wrong option I could go back and accept their offer next year?
longfeb Posted April 2, 2013 Posted April 2, 2013 Hi! Seems you'll need to contact the schools directly regarding their policy on waiting a year. I don't know much about Bard's program, but it does seem that one major difference is structural. Do you want to do school in the summer? And upstate? Or do you want to do a year long program and be in NYC? Also, in looking at the faculty and the vibe of the program, what seems more akin to your work? Not sure if this really helps, but just some thoughts.
longfeb Posted April 2, 2013 Posted April 2, 2013 And to add... I think Parsons is great for new media/photography, which is what I do as well. I was very impressed when I visited. I don't have any info on Bard, though, as I wasn't interested in a summer program.
deadwilder Posted April 3, 2013 Author Posted April 3, 2013 Thanks for the reply. I think both programs have great faculty and structure for Photography/New Media. Another thing I really like about Parsons is the possibility to take electives in other schools under the umbrella of The New School. I couldn't find much information on either of these programs in the forums, so I thought a request for general opinions and impressions would be valid.
