Hey all, I wasn't really sure what forum to post in so I thought I'd just post this here.  I will be attending grad school next year at either Seton Hall Whitehead (only if I receive a scholarship I applied for) or American SIS.  I have been applying to various summer internships for the past 2 months but still have yet to hear back from anything.  I was wondering if you all could share some tips for acquiring summer internships, especially in DC or NYC.  The only other work experience I have under my belt is a research assistantship at my current undergraduate program and a summer internship for a human rights commission in Nairobi, Kenya.  Is there something employees are looking for in a resume/cover letter that I'm just neglecting?

Any input/advice would be great!  Thanks!

They are looking for many things, but there is nothing you can do at this point anyways. It is not like you can go back in time to secure more work experience/internships, graduate from a better school, get into a better school, or get better grades. Just apply broadly and widely and don't have any standards.

Not that it needs to be said, but those markets are competitive for everyone and especially if you're looking for a paid opportunity. Keep things simple in terms of format (1 page resume, for example) and specific in terms of what you can bring to the table and why you're interested in each position. Mention the programs you've been admitted to and situate your academic goals within your career path.

Given that it's April, though, I don't know how many internships are still accepting applications. You may hear back from someone soon on an application you submitted previously, but if not, that sort of wraps it up.

There are still internship positions available. A lot of the positions have a deadline in mid-April. A lot of deadlines have passed already, sure, but it's definitely not too late to apply for some, especially if your search isn't too narrow.
