Wei_Yu Posted April 18, 2013 Posted April 18, 2013 I just received an email from the program director, saying" I will be asking my colleagues to extend a PhD student offer to you" What does that EXACTLY mean? I assume I get the position, right? Or the professor just means that he will recommend me.. PLS help. I'm really worried now..
sarah-bellum Posted April 18, 2013 Posted April 18, 2013 In my experience, the acceptance process usually went like this: Interview with prof of interest and possibly other faculty members Prof decides they would like to take you on as a student Prof recommends to the department that they accept you Department approves decision Department sends official acceptance Basically, the departmental approval is there to make sure that no really sub-par students get in - they might check out things like your grades, GRE scores if you took them, etc. I get the sense that it's not too common for departments to disapprove of a candidate once a prof has recommended them.
