kbburn Posted April 27, 2013 Posted April 27, 2013 It's so unclear what an average score is if you're going for a master's in Speech-Language Pathology. I actually only had 2 weeks notice that I had to take the GREs and I just took them yesterday with basically no studying. I got a 153 on verbal and quantitative, but I don't know my writing score yet. I had to take the GRE because I was applying to an early admission program at my current undergrad school. I'm planning on actually studying for them throughout the summer and retaking the test in August because I want to apply to more schools and improve my score. Are my current scores sufficient enough? If not, what should I shoot for? And, are GREs even important for this field?

If not, what should I shoot for? And, are GREs even important for this field? It really depends. There is no cut and dry answer to the GRE question. Programs weigh the GRE differently. Several of the schools I applied to had the 50th %ile as the minimum GRE score needed for admission. However, many admitted applicants had much higher scores than that. I have also been told that a combined verbal and quant. score should exceed 300 (at least). I would recommend talking to the program directors of the schools you are applying to, and see how heavily they weigh the GRE (and what scores they require). Good luck!
midnight Posted April 27, 2013 Posted April 27, 2013 I agree with jmarti. Also, some programs post their preferred (and in some cases, required) GRE score minimums on their websites (e.g., the school I'm going to attend says that their average admitted student GRE score is 308 [and who knows how much that changed during this application season], but they generally don't accept students with scores lower than 300).
kbburn Posted April 30, 2013 Author Posted April 30, 2013 Thank you both for your responses! I'm stressing about the GREs, but I think studying over the summer will definitely bring my scores up.

You have plenty of time if you're going to take it during the fall. Also make sure to join us in the SLP subforum if you haven't already!
