3dmcafe Posted April 28, 2013 Posted April 28, 2013 University of Houston or Texas State University? Both are for MSc in Applied Math, but Texas state give me a TA position with about $12500 every year. However, UH has a better rank than Texas state. I need to make a decision before May 1st. I have been strugging with this for two weeks. Any one know these two Universities? Give me some suggestions please. Is there a big difference in finding a good job after graduate? I do appreciate any help! Thanks a lot!
dat_nerd Posted April 28, 2013 Posted April 28, 2013 How much of a rank difference is there? I would also look into the cost of living at both places. Does the TA position give you a full tuition remission?

Does the TA position give you a full tuition remission? Thanks for your reply! about 100 difference in rank, but some Texans told me these two unis should be in the same level in Texas. However, I am not sure whether they are in the same level or not, because I live in England not in the US, just want to get a good job after graduate. Ths cost of living at these two places are both inexpensive. Texas State located in San Marcos, it should a little cheaper than Houston. Yep. It's nearly cover my tuition fee because they give me a discount on my out-state tuition fee also, so the amount of TA's salary is nearly the same as my tuition. My friend told me that Houston is better than San Marcos because there are lots of big companies in Houston, but I think San Marcos is just between Austin and San Antonio, they are also two major cities in Texas. Am I right? Thanks.
dat_nerd Posted April 28, 2013 Posted April 28, 2013 I don't live in Texas, so I can't give any advice about which city would be better to live in. I would look into each program's job placement rates, and see whether it lines up with your eventual career goals. You could ask the program coordinators directly or ask students at each program about their job hunt.

JPeterman Posted April 29, 2013 Posted April 29, 2013 Hi, I don't know anything about MS in Math for those two schools, but in general coming from engineering programs in Texas, my take on things is that University of Houston is definitely a tier or two up from Texas State, and if you're looking for jobs it's hard to beat Houston. I lived a number of years in Houston and that's likely biasing my take on things, but I'd seriously consider seeing if UH could match your offer, or trying to negotiate something with them. Is there any chance they can help you out with funding? If I could afford it, I'd go to UH over TSU though. "If I could afford it" being probably the biggest qualifier anyone ever puts on something in this forum. ;-)
