Applicant : S. ABINAV VISWANATH
Undergraduation Major : Mechanical engineering
E-mail : abinav91@gmail.com
Thanks to the rapid development in science and technology, plethora of challenges is emerging out that has also opened the doors of new scope for research in Mechanical engineering too. This has always fascinated me and has made me to pursue a career that involves creative thinking and challenging problems. My good analytical skills along with problem solving capabilities have prompted me to pursue my career through a Masters in Mechanical Engineering at your esteemed university to attain the highest level of education and transcend new hope for research in Mechanical engineering.
My tryst with automotive engineering began during my school days when I was an ardent follower of Formula One. I remember being hooked to the television, watching in amazement, an array of open wheeled cars circulates the track in a staggering fashion. Interestingly, I perceived the spectacle as a technical exercise rather than a mere sport. Even at that age, I knew enough to appreciate the sheer genius of the wizards who had engineered those magnificent machines. It was then that I aspired to enter this intriguing branch of engineering and make a mark in the automotive universe.
During the course of my undergraduate studies, I've acquired a strong background in the fundamentals of the basic Mechanical Engineering subjects like Thermodynamics, Heat and Mass transfer, Manufacturing Technology, Fluid mechanics, CAD/CAM, Kinematics and Dynamics of Machinery, Design of Machine Elements/ Transmission Systems, etc. I have also had an introduction to specialized areas like Finite Element Analysis, Process Planning and Cost Estimation, Gas Dynamics and Jet Propulsion, Operations Research, and Unconventional Machining Processes.
The adage “Importance of questioning everything before accepting” has been my key strength. This positive attitude has well impacted my academic records. I am currently ranked in the top 3 percentile category of my university with a CGPA 8.23. I take this opportunity to describe my educational achievements and career objectives. I finished my schooling with 96% in X Std and Secured first in the Educational district (Tenkasi) and third in Tirunelveli district. In X11 Std I scored 94.5% that helped me to cherish my dream of getting into the stream of Mechanical engineering in a reputed Institution. I am proud to say that our college is one of the best colleges in the state that every student has a dream to enroll into.
A thorough knowledge of computers is imperative for any engineer to be successful. As a part of my endeavor to learn more about the use of computers in my field I am presently crediting P.G Master Diploma in Modeling, Analysis and Simulation (AUTOCAD, CATIA ,ANSYS, SOLID WORKS, PRO-E, MSP and PPM concepts) and Certificate courses in C++.. I also presented a paper on “STEERING ASSISTED HEADLIGHTS” in Adhiparasakthi Engineering College, Melmaruvathur, as part of a Symposium Event along with various notable presentations in my college.
Automobile engineering had always been the area of fun and excitement in my childhood. I used to draw car models by pouring imagination, using spring attached seats fitted over tyres and moving it over bumps on roads. But in my undergraduate studies, I understood how the important concepts of aerodynamics, suspension systems, traction control systems, differential mechanism systems work. The course advanced internal combustion engine provided me deep insights on the engine operations. In-plant training in RANE ENGINE VALVES helped me to understand the diesel engines practically and the workings of valve system which had always been a mystery in my school days. This was a breakthrough moment for me where I met theory in practice
My first encounter with a real world engineering problem was when our team decided to work on the „Eco-friendly‟ theme for the design and fabrication project. On the lines of my opinion that eco-friendly designs must evolve from serving just industries and automobiles to
domestic applications, we chose to design and fabricate a refrigerator system with a heat exchanger. This project allowed me to take my theoretical knowledge in subjects like design of machine elements, Heat and mass transfer and Thermal engineering beyond the classroom and into the workshop. Here we made use of the heat steaming from the Refrigerant to heat the water via a heat exchanger, thus cooling the refrigerant initially before it enters the condenser and hence providing high efficiency. This reduces the emission of heat from the refrigerator to a considerable amount. Thus, when applied in commercial scale, it would play a part in reducing global warming. We succeeded in fabricating the model and it is currently being employed in my college campus.
I then had the opportunity to work on the ANALYSIS OF PERFORMANCE, COMBUSTION AND EMMISSION CHARACTERISTICS OF JATROPHA METHYL ESTER BLEND DIESEL FOR CI ENGINE WITH VARIABLE COMPRESSION RATIO upon completion of my sophomore year under Dr.S.Arivazhagan. My work involved the experimental determination of the above mentioned characteristics under the blends of 10%, 20% and 30% using CR 16 and 18 and also a mathematical model of three dimensional simulations using CFD software STAR CD. This opened a whole new world of simulation using computational fluid dynamics for me. The paper incorporating these results has been accepted for publication by the International Journal of Engineering Science and Technology (http://www.ijest.info/current-issue.php , SI No. 51). The project exposed me to quality research and honed my skill for analytical thinking and technical writing. It also gave me the opportunity to critically analyze heat transfer mechanisms and made me ponder about aspects which I would not have paid attention to on a course.
Along with strong academic background, I have a penchant for extracurricular activities too. I participated in various Fine Arts competitions and YOGA at school level and was part of the School Volleyball Team and represented the School at the Regional Level. Academics and technical research apart, I have realized a lot of my inspiration towards automobiles through academic workshops. I once got an opportunity to interact with a team of Maruti Suzuki‟s senior designers, in an automotive styling and design workshop. The pioneers provided an
insight on the automotive design process, design languages and functional design. They also drew up an account of the impediments they faced in their quest to strike the all important balance between style and practicality. The workshop proved to be an enlightening experience which made me adore the way, stunning aesthetics and cutting edge technology fused to deliver some of the most exotic automotive art forms. Further, I fuel my passion for the field by dedicating my leisure to pertinent activities. Simulation racing (Need for Speed), for instance, though seemingly trivial, induced in me a zest for vehicle dynamics and handling in possibly the most exciting manner.
I believe in the ancient saying that “Knowledge grows when shared” and to help channel the development of interest in automotive technology in my college, I pioneered the inception of the club in my college of the Society of Automotive Engineering. Founding the club and organizing activities as a part of the club offered me valuable lessons in leadership. With the help of the club, I was able to incite automotive interests in my juniors and also help them gain proficiency in packages like Catia, Ansys and Fluent. At the end of the day, I can say that I have helped make my juniors take a liking towards automotive engineering and hence, the knowledge has grown .
The Masters program International Automotive Engineering at RWTH Aachen will provide me the best international exposure and excellent quality of education required to achieve my career goal. Further, studying in a country which is the techno-research leader will provide a lot of potential for my professional growth. I strongly believe that I possess the motivation, the intellectual capability and the solid groundwork to set out on this exhilarating path, to do justice to a demanding graduate program and make significant contributions to the ongoing work at the Hochschule Inglostadt.
I can assure you that given a chance I shall strive to live up to the expectations.
RWTH, here I come!

Hello,

I've added my comments below. These just are my two cents, so feel free to take or leave them as you would like.

Applicant : S. ABINAV VISWANATH
Undergraduation Major : Mechanical engineering
E-mail : abinav91@gmail.com

Unless specifically requested, the applicant information at the start isn't necessary.

This paragraph isn't necessary. Your next paragraph is a better introduction and gets straight to the point.

This paragraph is a better introduction. You'll be sending them your transcript, so I wouldn't list the classes you've taken unless a particular one sparked your interests.

The adage “Importance of questioning everything before accepting” has been my key strength. This positive attitude has well impacted my academic records. I am currently ranked in the top 3 percentile category of my university with a CGPA 8.23. I take this opportunity to describe my educational achievements and career objectives. I am proud to say that our college is one of the best colleges in the state that every student has a dream to enroll into.

I'd remove this paragraph. The GPA information will be on your transcript, and there's no need to talk about the prestige of your undergraduate university. The adcomms have an understanding of which universities are well known in your field.

Your research is an essential part of your application, and the SOP is one of the only chances you'll have to explain it. Maybe you could expand on what you did in your projects, what you learned, why it's helped you become a better researcher, etc.

In-plant training in RANE ENGINE VALVES helped me to understand the diesel engines practically and the workings of valve system which had always been a mystery in my school days. This was a breakthrough moment for me where I met theory in practice

This paragraph does not contribute much toward your overall story. You could remove this paragraph or you could add more details about how this experience impacted you and changed your goals.

This reduces the emission of heat from the refrigerator to a considerable amount. Thus, when applied in commercial scale, it would play a part in reducing global warming. We succeeded in fabricating the model and it is currently being employed in my college campus.

Great paragraph. I like how you explained the details of your project here. Another sentence about why this project was meaningful to you would be the icing on the cake.

The paper incorporating these results has been accepted for publication by the International Journal of Engineering Science and Technology (http://www.ijest.inf...rrent-issue.php , SI No. 51). The project exposed me to quality research and honed my skill for analytical thinking and technical writing. It also gave me the opportunity to critically analyze heat transfer mechanisms and made me ponder about aspects which I would not have paid attention to on a course.

Great paragraph. Again, you could add a bit more about how this has changed you or was meaningful.

Along with strong academic background, I have a penchant for extracurricular activities too. I participated in various Fine Arts competitions and YOGA at school level and was part of the School Volleyball Team and represented the School at the Regional Level. Further, I fuel my passion for the field by dedicating my leisure to pertinent activities. Simulation racing (Need for Speed), for instance, though seemingly trivial, induced in me a zest for vehicle dynamics and handling in possibly the most exciting manner.

If you're looking for words to cut, I'd remove this paragraph. Extracurriculars don't usually factor into admission decisions.

At the end of the day, I can say that I have helped make my juniors take a liking towards automotive engineering and hence, the knowledge has grown .

This paragraph would be more relevant and stronger if it tied your leadership skills to your ability as a researcher.

Abinav Viswanath.

At some point, you may want to mention who you'd be interested in working with at the university.

I like the content toward the middle of your SOP where you get into the details of your project. If you can focus on these points a bit more, I think you'll have no problem reducing the statement length. Best wishes!
