s226 Posted June 10, 2013 Posted June 10, 2013 Hi, does anyone know which has greater opportunity for employment/more marketable--I'm thinking community colleges, freelance writing, and there are probably job categories I haven't thought of. I've tutored ESL as freelancer and tutor writing at a community college writing center. I'd like to get an MA. I'm not so interested in teaching abroad. I don't have a teaching certificate nor plan to get one. I work with many part-time instructors who work hard and are not compensated well for the work they do. I was told by a full time instructor that if one is willing to travel across the country, there are more opportunities. I'd like to live in a big city, or a fairly large university town. Thanks very much. Sarah
ComeBackZinc Posted June 10, 2013 Posted June 10, 2013 Tough question to answer in the abstract. As with most things, it'll depend a great deal on your department, professors, opportunities for professional service, etc. Have you thought about attending a school that has strong programs in both, where you could take classes in each? It's fairly common. There's a lot of hybridity between the two disciplines.
s226 Posted June 12, 2013 Author Posted June 12, 2013 Thanks I believe IUP may have a joint or additional program in TESOl. I'm going to post this somewhere else on the forum too: Does anyone know about the MA comp and rhet program at Wayne State? Thanks.
