is that enough to live on? i really really don't want to take out loans. my other option is a $30,000 stipend at the university of washington. but that only lasts for 2 years and then i'm back on a $12,500/year stipend.

12,000 is enough to live on in Texas, depending on what kind of housing you want. Austin is fairly inexpensive. Check out Craigslist---if you don't mind a bit of a drive to school, you can get apartments for $600.
