susanbe Posted September 18, 2013 Posted September 18, 2013 Hello, I am a first year MSW student, very interested in international development work, my school doesn't have a dual degree with the international affairs dept. Is social work something any of you global affairs students/professionals are interested in? It's a niche area -- I'm just trying to see if there's a career path with social work/international studies
MPPgal Posted September 18, 2013 Posted September 18, 2013 I know my school only has it with the public policy department so a lot of dual degrees just do that and specialize in international studies concentration
susanbe Posted September 18, 2013 Author Posted September 18, 2013 good to hear this is an educational path people take. does anyone have insights on realistic career prospects? specific jobs?
michigan girl Posted September 19, 2013 Posted September 19, 2013 Try to find a field placement that allows you to travel abroad for the summer (or the year). Some social work programs (not sure where you attend) have global social work specializations. Try to fulfill your electives in the international studies department at your school. You will have to be entrepreneurial with your degree progress.
Lulu_ Posted January 13, 2014 Posted January 13, 2014 University of Minnesota has a dual degree MPP/MSW. You could call them to ask about the program and have them put you in touch with current students. They might be more aware about job prospects and so forth.
MPAallday Posted January 27, 2014 Posted January 27, 2014 I considered this option for quite sometime. I eventually decided that public affairs was more of my "calling", but many MPA/MPP students do indeed opt for a dual degree in social work.
