achates Posted October 14, 2013 Posted October 14, 2013 (edited) Hey everyone, Here's an interesting opportunity to teach recent immigrants English. Although it is a volunteer position, it is a wonderful opportunity to gain hands-on experience in the classroom, meet eager ESL learners and passionate high school youth, as well as provide an invaluable service to the community by empowering adult language learners. "The Chinatown Literacy Project (CLP) is a student-led program taking place on Sundays during the school year that addresses the problem of illiteracy by providing free ESL classes to adult language learners, particularly recent immigrants from China. We rely on qualified teachers to lead English classes each week. We are currently seeking volunteer teachers for our program. We would greatly appreciate it if you could share this opportunity with all interested parties. The online application and instructions can be found at http://goo.gl/lR0I0K. Teachers will be paired with an assistant and aided by high school students who will work with small groups of the ESL students at the end of each class. CLP classes will be from 9 AM to 12 PM every Sunday from mid-October to mid-April, excluding weekends that coincide with major holidays on the NYC public school calendar. Teachers will attend meetings before the program starts for staff and curriculum development. They will also attend meetings throughout the year with CLP staff in order to evaluate the curriculum, share feedback and mark the progress of their class. The application is due Thursday, October 17th at 11:59 PM. Please email literacy@cyinyc.org with any questions or if you need more time to complete the application. Thanks!"
