Bubita Posted October 16, 2013 Posted October 16, 2013 Hi, I am interested in applying to MPH programs in Epidemiology, and am trying to write my SOP. However, I am unsure if my work experience relates to Public Health and would be useful for my application. Here is a brief background: I have a BS in Health Services Administration, which included coursework in Statistics, Biostatistics, Epidemiology, Health Planning & Marketing and Research & Program Evaluation. I also completed a year of Anatomy & Physiology, General Biology and Chemistry. Work Experience: - Health Administration Intern = Summer Internship at a Community Health Center OB/GYN department working on an initiative project to improve postpartum return rates for PCAP recipients. - 5 years of work experience in a Day Habilitation program providing direct support and pre-employment training to individuals with disabilities in community settings; community liaison. - Currently working for a non-profit/State funded Managed Care Organization as a Service Coordinator in the Managed Long Term Care department. Sorry for the long post. Any advice/suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.
katethekitcat Posted October 17, 2013 Posted October 17, 2013 Yes, this is related to public health. Really, anything can be related to public health - what matters is how you describe the work in your personal application. Even if it's not something directly in the traditional public health field, explain how the ideas and skills relate. You're applying to the field to learn more about it and begin a career; you're not expected to already be proficient, just demonstrate an interest. Solid explanation will go further than any one previous experience.
